From Rich:

Good morning, gang,
Nice job all last night coming to the WMLOA meeting – 43 guys at a meeting shows that the guys on this board care about LAX and doing a good job on the field….the E Board appreciates it.
Here is a simple recap to just make sure all are on the same page:
a. Face Offs – Prior to game starting, and after to talk to the coaches and captains…request a meeting with the face off players. IMPORTANT – this is strictly to check the Tape on stick. Get it done prior to start of game.
b. Over Back – Restart – Federation, not prep – the Trail will blow whistle, make over back call…..we will slow this restart down slightly….get the 5 yard separation – then give re-start up to new Trail by looking at him and acknowledging him….then get to your lead and position.
c. Communication – Umpire and/or field judge will contact Referee on game at least one day prior to game…this includes JV – email is fine, texting as well…early season, Long Black Pants are OK….but….you both need to have them on….if you both have shorts, and only one person has long pants, you are wearing shorts….we don’t care if it is 20 degrees…..THUS….take the time to pack your bags, include it all.
d. Field Issues – if there is an issue out there (fight, etc.) that requires ejection forms, or if there was an major issue during the game, etc. CALL OR EMAIL CRAIG right after game – our assigner does not want surprises.,then EMAIL OR TEXT Randy and I ….things happen during the course of the season…let us know what is going on.
e. Mentors – Woodie – nice job putting this together – mentors – really take the time to get our rooks up and running – Mentees – call your mentors, discuss plays, situations –
f. Observations – Risty is heading this up, and Eric Conz will be helping – much of these will be un-announced – not to surprise you, but to allow Dave and observers to not have you alter from your normal mechanics and calls. WELCOME these observations! If in life, someone could give you 3-4 things to make you better, you would love it (I know, except from your wife…LOL)…..but – Dave and the observers will make you a better official……get better!.
g. Finally, 3 man mechanics – Georgie, nice job!
Guys, this was a very simple overview of 3 man – focused on positioning – several of you will be doing 3 man prep school games this year…..and this is a first experience for you.
Like George said – KEEP IT SIMPLE – I will give you a little tip on getting more comfortable before your 3 Man Games – many of us did this:
(a.) DVR or Tape a TV game – (b.) Take (1) 3 x 5 card, and put three separate boxes (c)Right down the 4-5 things that each officiating position is responsible for (example –Single Side – counts, Trail, count ahead, Lead, GLE, etc) (d) now, every transition, and then when settled, watch the officials, not the game – say “new lead, he has this….Single, this, Trail, this..and then watch and see what the guys on the field are doing….and then it is time for your game, and you are now on the field, and your game starts….you have “TRAINED” yourself for the 4-5 most important things you SHOULD BE DOING in each position- then you just call the game…….Trust me, it works.
All, have a great start to the season, call with issues, HAVE FUN!
Thanks for efforts,
Rich

Next meeting March 28

Good morning,

I hope all had a good weekend….the start of the HS/PREP LAX season is quickly coming, and this means we should try and button up the last things we need to do prior to the start of the season.

The E-Board has decided to get the next meeting in for WMLOA next Monday March 28. The reason for this date so quickly after the clinic is that this is the last day for the next 8 weeks that we do not have guys doing High School and or Youth Games….so….we would really appreciate a strong turn out.

As with any meeting or time we ask you to come to, we want to be sure that the time we spend is worth your valuable time, and we feel strongly this meeting is both important, and will be worth your time to get there. The meeting is in South Hadley, MA at the Yarde House Tavern – we were able to get the back room area, and we will be able to set up and go over everything…address is below:

Here is the agenda, and this may actually change a bit based upon feedback:

a. 7:00 – Meeting starts – as this is a work night, we will get going right at 7:00 PROMPTLY– get there early – the meeting will go between 60 and 75 minutes…we will have you done NLT 8:15.

b. High School Mechanics – as we went over the new rules at the clinic, we will now take the key changes for 2016 and review the mechanics, restarts and situations that have already come up in the scrimmages and have the potential to cause some issues at the start of the season…..it is VERY IMPORTANT that we are consistent here……day 1……the situations:

(1.) Over and Back – how do we call…communicate?….who will take the re-start? ..who will set up 5 yards prior to restart?….when will new lead get out of there, role of trail, etc?….will include situations to review.

(2.) New Face-off – on a violation, who will be responsible for re-start?…..new lead, trail?….who will insure the offensive and defensive players are frozen in their boxes? ..again, 2-3 situations to discuss.

(3.) Face-off – how will we be insuring the new Tape/STICK Rule is enforced? Do we have quick meeting with Face Off guys prior to game starting? what happens if a player shows up with the Wrong Color/Non Contrasting Tape on a face-off….or….maybe a long stick takes a face-off, and you see tape on the head? what are we going to do? We MUST be the same at every game, or we create head-aches…start thinking about these.

(4.) Face-off – review of what is legal and illegal concerning With-holding – I watched a few FOs last night that the “clamp” down on the ball seemed a bit LONGER than the rule dictates..in fact, a Western MA coach was at the game, and he asked me to clarify, as he felt it seemed grey…..again, we MUST be consistent here…..same with the new 1 step rule…..as well, we feel there is still some confusion on where to Re-Start the ball following a Face-off violation, or non Face-off violation away from the FO area – do you ALL understand the rule change? we will go over situations.

c. 3 Man Mechanics – most of the Prep schools will be utilizing 3 officials per game and on any givenSaturday or Wed, there may be 4-5 games going – or the need for 12-15 officials – considering the raw #s of officials that are doing College, it will be VITAL that we do what we can as an E-Board to get as many of you up to speed on 3 Man – thus……

       ## We will be doing a 3-Man Mechanic Overview at the meeting – if you are hoping to, plan to, or would like to be considered for a 3-Man game, this will be your chance to get some training in – the training will be a true Over-View of the Positioning and responsibilities – Guys, inside of each of your WMLOA Books is the 3 Man US LAX Mechanics – PLEASE – start to read through…..NOTE – first year guys…..you do NOT need to look at these..focus on 2 Man..but others, lets get as many of you as possible understanding these mechanics.

d. HS Rules ExamDUE Monday 3-28 – guys, please bring these to meeting – if you cannot make meeting, PLEASE let Randy or I know…..so you can send in your completed exams. This is required….Thanks

e. Mentors – Woodie will be introducing each Mentoring Assignment at the meeting – and review the Training and Mentoring Goals –

f.  WMLOA Coins – they are IN – we will hand out at meeting.

Gents, our last chance to get buttoned up prior to the next 8 weeks of games, chaos, etc…..please try and get there….we had a great season last season, but the new rules will present a new set of challenges for all of us….after watching some scrimmages last 2 weekends…….trust me – we ALL need to discuss above.

Have a good week….Yarde House address below.

Thanks, Rich
